Cupping: Frequently Asked Questions - Elite Muscle Recovery

Cupping FAQ

Who should not get cupping?

People with bleeding disorders, those taking blood thinners, or people with very fragile/thin skin should avoid cupping. Cupping is also generally not recommended for people with skin infections, open wounds, active cancer, or severe cardiovascular disease. Pregnant women should avoid cupping on the abdomen and lower back.

Is cupping only for athletes?

No, cupping can be beneficial for anyone, not just athletes. While cupping is popular among athletes, it can help anyone experiencing pain, stress, or tension. If you’re dealing with chronic pain, acute pain, tightness, or general stress, cupping can be a beneficial addition to your physical therapy plan of care.

Is cupping a new trend?

No, cupping is an ancient therapy that has been practiced for thousands of years, especially in Chinese medicine and ancient Egyptian cultures. It has experienced a more recent resurgence in popularity and awareness due to its proven benefits and use by professional athletes and celebrities.

What are the circular marks that result from cupping?

Cupping often causes “cup kisses,” perfectly circular marks that appear red or purple in color. As a result of the suction used with cups, blood flow rises to the surface, causing these marks. The suctioning causes a very localized, acute dilation of the capillaries. These tiny blood vessels break easily, releasing lactic acid and carbon dioxide. This process and the breaking of these little capillaries are what leave these perfectly round circles. Depending on your body’s stagnation, the cup marks range in color and length of stay. It can be anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks.

Is cupping therapy painful?

Not usually. Practitioners apply cups tightly during stationary cupping. This creates a suction-like feel that may be uncomfortable at first but is not painful.

Cup sliding or dragging involves applying oil to the skin, and then placing the cups and moving them around while they still have suction to the skin. This form of cupping can sometimes be a bit more uncomfortable for patients, but it’s a quick treatment and very effective for releasing fascia.
