In this blog series, we are exploring the benefits of cash pay physical therapy when compared to traditional, insurance-based PT clinics. Today, we will focus on a few specific advantages. Let’s dive in!

Predictable cost

When using insurance for physical therapy, it is often difficult to predict how much each visit will cost. Patients frequently receive a surprise bill months after they are done with their PT. The cost depends on what treatments and treatment codes are used at each visit. In this setting, it is difficult to completely predict how much the insurance will cover and how much the patient will be responsible for.

However, in a cash pay setting, the cost for each visit is always the same, no matter what treatments or activities are done in the session. Patients at a cash pay clinic pay for their visit at the time of service, and will never receive an unexpected bill. In this way, patients can budget for their physical therapy and know exactly what to expect in regard to the cost of their treatment.

Less Visits Needed to Achieve Goals

Cash pay physical therapy typically requires less visits compared to insurance based PT. The average amount of visits needed to achieve progress and goals in a cash pay setting is 6-8 sessions. Naturally, visit amount can vary depending on the patient and the diagnosis.

Because cash-pay clinics give personalized, focused, and one-on-one care without insurance limitations, recovery is typically faster. While insurance-based physical therapy typically requires 2-3 visits per week, cash pay patients attend on average one time per week. The outcomes are the same or even better despite the reduced visit frequency at cash pay clinics.

While cash pay PT may be more costly on the front end, it often saves patients money in the long term. This is due to less frequent and less overall visits needed to achieve the desired outcome. The cost of visits at a cash pay clinic can be less or comparable to paying a copay or coinsurance for more visits at an insurance based clinic.

Option to Submit a Super bill

If you’ve been following along with all of the benefits of cash pay PT so far, but still thinking, “I pay a lot for medical insurance, and it just makes sense to use it!”, then this article is for you. We understand that you and/or your employer may be paying for your medical insurance, and we understand that you would want to tap into those benefits whenever possible. This is why we offer a super bill at the conclusion of your treatment to allow you to submit to insurance for application toward your deductible, or reimbursement if your deductible has been met for the year. Many of our patients at Elite Muscle Recovery prefer the benefits of a cash pay clinic, but still decide to submit super bills to their medical insurance on the back end. Talk about a win-win situation!
